Aroldis Chapman
Aroldis Chapman Blows save, takes loss
Wed, May 14, 2025, 9:43 PM
Chapman (2-2) blew the save opportunity and took the loss against the Tigers on Wednesday, allowing one run on one hit and one walk while striking out one batter in 0.2 innings.
Analysis: Chapman was brought in for the ninth inning tasked with keeping the game tied at 5-5. He was able to retire the next two batters after issuing a walk to Andy Ibanez, but Chapman was unable to send the game into extra innings after Justyn-Henry Malloy walked off the Red Sox with a pinch hit RBI single. It was Chapman's first blown save of the season, and the veteran southpaw is up to a 2.25 ERA and 1.00 WHIP over 16 innings.
Alex Bregman
Alex Bregman Belts homer in back-to-back games
Wed, May 14, 2025, 9:31 PM
Bregman went 3-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 6-5 loss to Detroit.
Analysis: Bregman -- who entered Wednesday's contest 1-for-11 with four strikeouts in his three prior games -- gave the Red Sox a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning, when he took Tarik Skubal deep to left-center field for a solo home run. Bregman has hit a home run in consecutive games and is up to 11 on the year, which is tied with Wilyer Abreu for most on the Red Sox and fourth-most in the American League. Bregman has a .981 OPS through 199 plate appearances this season, which is his highest since the 2019 season with the Astros (1.015).
Hunter Dobbins
Hunter Dobbins Yields five runs in no-decision
Wed, May 14, 2025, 9:23 PM
Dobbins did not factor into the decision in Wednesday's game against Detroit, allowing five runs on nine hits while striking out four across five innings. He did not issue a walk.
Analysis: Dobbins was able to limit the Tigers to two runs over the first five frames. He was brought back for the sixth frame, but he was unable to record an out and was tagged for three more runs, highlighted by a two-run homer by Riley Greene. It was the most runs Dobbins has given up in a start this season, and his efforts Wednesday brought his ERA and WHIP up to 3.90 and 1.30, respectively, over 27.2 innings. It looked to have been his last run in the Red Sox's rotation due to the impending return of Walker Buehler (shoulder) next week, but Tanner Houck (forearm) was placed on the 15-day injured list Wednesday, which prompted Boston to recall Cooper Criswell from Triple-A Worcester. It remains to be seen whether Dobbins or Criswell will serve in the Red Sox's rotation while Houck is on the shelf.
Cooper Criswell
Cooper Criswell Recalled by Boston
Wed, May 14, 2025, 4:40 PM
The Red Sox recalled Criswell from Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports.
Analysis: Criswell -- who is with the Red Sox in Detroit -- will take the spot on the 26-man roster vacated by Tanner Houck (forearm), who was placed on the 15-day injured list in a corresponding move. Criswell made three appearances for the Red Sox out of the bullpen this season, but he's started in four games in Triple-A and will likely be part of the rotation while Houck is on the shelf. Criswell made 18 starts (in 26 outings) for the Red Sox in 2024 and posted a 6-5 record with a 4.08 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 73:31 K:BB across 99.1 innings.
Tanner Houck
Tanner Houck Placed on injured list
Wed, May 14, 2025, 4:38 PM
The Red Sox placed Houck on the 15-day injured list Wednesday, retroactive to Tuesday, with a right flexor pronator strain, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports.
Analysis: Houck was shelled for 11 runs in just 2.1 innings during his last start against Detroit on Monday, and his injury may have been a contributing factor to his poor performance. He'll now spend at least a couple of weeks on the shelf to ensure he gets back to 100 percent for his next outing; meanwhile, Cooper Criswell will come up from Triple-A Worcester to claim the open spot on the big-league roster, and potentially the Sox's rotation.
Josh Winckowski
Josh Winckowski Goes on Triple-A IL
Wed, May 14, 2025, 3:33 PM
Winckowski was placed on the 7-day injured list at Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday with right elbow inflammation, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Analysis: It's not yet clear how long Winkowski will be sidelined, but it will be a while before he's under consideration for a promotion to the major-league club. The swingman holds a 3.86 ERA and 9:5 K:BB over 11.2 innings with the Red Sox this season and a 2.21 ERA and 18:2 K:BB across 20.1 frames with Worcester.
Wilyer Abreu
Wilyer Abreu Taking seat in series finale
Wed, May 14, 2025, 2:37 PM
Abreu is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Tigers.
Analysis: Abreu had started every game dating back to April 29, but he'll head to the bench while the Tigers send reigning American League Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal to the hill. Rob Refsnyder will draw the start in right field in place of the lefty-hitting Abreu, who is batting .190 against same-handed pitching this season.
Nick Sogard
Nick Sogard Gaining traction at first base
Wed, May 14, 2025, 2:35 PM
Sogard will start at first base and bat seventh in Wednesday's game against the Tigers.
Analysis: Sogard will draw his fourth start in five games and looks to have settled in as Boston's preferred option at first base in the wake of Triston Casas (knee) being lost for the season and Romy Gonzalez (back) recently going on the IL. Unless the Red Sox look for help outside the organization or if Rafael Devers reverses his stance and agrees to take some reps at first base, Sogard could be in store for a regular role so long as he performs well enough at the plate to warrant the playing time.
Carlos Narvaez
Carlos Narvaez Playing time picking up
Wed, May 14, 2025, 2:32 PM
Narvaez will start at catcher and bat eighth in Wednesday's game against the Tigers.
Analysis: He'll get the nod behind the plate for the fourth time in five games and seems to have taken over as the Red Sox's preferred backstop ahead of Connor Wong, who is batting just .146 on the season. Narvaez has performed well at the dish, especially by catcher's standards, throughout the campaign, slashing .260/.313/.433 with four home runs and 14 RBI across 112 plate appearances.
Connor Wong
Connor Wong Losing work to Narvaez
Wed, May 14, 2025, 2:30 PM
Wong is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Tigers.
Analysis: The 28-year-old will hit the bench for the fourth time in five games and looks to have at least temporarily fallen behind Carlos Narvaez on the depth chart at catcher. Wong produced a respectable .758 OPS over 487 plate appearances with Boston in 2024 but has struggled to find a rhythm at the plate since rejoining the big club May 2 following a stint on the injured list due to a broken finger. He's gone just 4-for-18 with one walk against six strikeouts since being activated and is slashing .146/.239/.146 overall on the season.
Rob Refsnyder
Rob Refsnyder In Wednesday's lineup
Wed, May 14, 2025, 2:18 PM
Refsnyder (back) will start in right field and bat cleanup in Wednesday's game in Detroit, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Analysis: Refsnyder has been unavailable lately due to back spasms but is feeling well enough to give it a go in Wednesday's series finale. The 34-year-old hasn't logged a plate appearance since May 1.
Richard Fitts
Richard Fitts Expected to face hitters soon
Wed, May 14, 2025, 11:37 AM
Fitts (pectoral) has been throwing up-and-down bullpen sessions and is expected to be cleared to face hitter soon, MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Fitts is a month removed from landing on the 15-day injured list with a right pectoral strain and has progressed well lately. The right-hander will require a rehab assignment before being activated and might be optioned to Triple-A Worcester rather than rejoining the Red Sox.
Romy Gonzalez
Romy Gonzalez Minimum absence expected
Wed, May 14, 2025, 11:34 AM
Red Sox manager Alex Cora believes Gonzalez (back) will be ready to return from the 10-day injured list when first eligible May 18, MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Gonzalez first suffered a back injury one week ago and officially landed on the IL this past weekend. It's unclear whether he will need to play any rehab games before being activated, but the infielder appears on track for activation Sunday. Once activated, Gonzalez should regain his standing as Boston's top option at first base.
David Hamilton
David Hamilton Belts home run in loss
Wed, May 14, 2025, 8:30 AM
Hamilton went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and two runs scored in Tuesday's extra-innings loss to Detroit.
Analysis: Hamilton singled and scored in the fifth inning and came up clutch with a game-tying, two-run shot in the eighth to force extra innings. It was his second home run of the year and first since April 16. Hamilton has posted a .981 OPS with three multi-hit performances over his last seven games. Despite the recent hot streak, Hamilton owns a .579 OPS with just three extra-base hits through 58 plate appearances this season.
Brayan Bello
Brayan Bello Delivers short outing
Wed, May 14, 2025, 8:26 AM
Bello did not factor in the decision during Tuesday's extra-innings loss to the Tigers. He allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks while striking out four over 4.2 innings.
Analysis: Bello coughed up a run in the first inning and the Tigers plated another on an error in the third. He then served up a solo shot to Spencer Torkelson in the fourth. Bello has failed to complete five innings in back-to-back starts after turning in two consecutive quality starts. He tossed 55 of 92 pitches for strikes and now owns a lackluster 17:14 K:BB through 27 frames. Bello will carry a 2.33 ERA into his next matchup, which is projected to be at home against the Mets.
Greg Weissert
Greg Weissert Blows save, takes loss
Wed, May 14, 2025, 8:21 AM
Weissert (1-1) took the extra-innings loss Tuesday after allowing four runs (two earned) on three hits in an inning-plus against Detroit. He struck out one and was charged with a blown save.
Analysis: Weissert blew the 7-6 lead in the 10th inning and allowed the game to go into the 11th, where he coughed up a walk-off three-run shot to Javier Baez. Weissert lost his 7.2-inning scoreless streak and has now blown both his save chances this season. His ERA rose to 3.44 with a 19:5 K:BB across 19 appearances. Aroldis Chapman threw a scoreless ninth inning and has maintained his role as Boston's primary closer.
Tanner Houck
Tanner Houck TBD on next start
Tue, May 13, 2025, 3:51 PM
Manager Alex Cora said Tuesday that "as of now," Houck will make his next start Sunday against Atlanta, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Analysis: It sounds like Cora is leaving the door open for Houck to not stay in the rotation after Houck gave up 11 earned runs Monday for the second time this season. If the team goes in another direction, Sean Newcomb or Cooper Criswell could be candidates for a spot start, as Walker Buehler (shoulder) is aiming to return next week.
Trevor Story
Trevor Story Sitting amid slump
Tue, May 13, 2025, 2:17 PM
Story is not in Tuesday's lineup against the Tigers.
Analysis: Story had started seven games in a row and 40 of 43 games he was available for, but he is hitting .122 with a 35 percent strikeout rate over his last 18 games. David Hamilton, who is batting .180 this year, is starting at shortstop and batting eighth.
Tanner Houck
Tanner Houck Hammered by Tigers
Mon, May 12, 2025, 9:29 PM
Houck (0-3) allowed 11 runs on nine hits and three walks over 2.1 innings while taking a loss against the Tigers on Monday.
Analysis: Houck coughed up a two-run shot to Gleyber Torres in the first inning and then turned in a scoreless second frame. The third inning was a nightmare, as the Tigers would plate nine runs, including Trey Sweeney's three-run blast. Shockingly, Houck has allowed 11 earned runs twice this season and his ERA jumped from 6.10 to 8.04 after Monday's awful outing. He's delivered three quality starts in nine appearances this season but has failed to complete six innings in any of the other six starts. Still looking for his first win of 2025, Houck is expected to face Atlanta at home this weekend.
Rafael Devers
Rafael Devers Hits game-winning homer Sunday
Sun, May 11, 2025, 9:26 PM
Devers went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run and a walk in Sunday's 3-1 win over the Royals.
Analysis: Devers broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run homer that traveled 440 feet in the sixth inning. Despite the drama surrounding the 28-year-old in recent days, he's gone 17-for-37 with four extra-base hits and 12 RBI through 10 games in May. On the season, he's slashing .280/.398/.490 with seven home runs, 31 RBI, 25 runs scored and a steal across 191 plate appearances.
